Summertime

"Summertime" is an aria from George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess which was composed in 1935. It is often sung in a spiritual style and could be sung in various languages.

Listen to these versions and compare the differences:
a) Renee Fleming (operatic style)
b) Ella Fitzgerald (jazz style, 1968)
c) Jill Scott & George Benson
d) Fantasia Barrino (American Idol 3)

Here are the opening lines:
Summertime,
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high

Your daddy's rich
And your mamma's good lookin'
So hush little baby
Don't you cry

The piece sung by Ella Fitzgerald (jazz style, 1968) was quite touching as it was sad. She sung it ina sad way. This was a sad and slow piece. The piece sung by Jill Scott & George Benson was quite nice and enjoyable. This was a happy and fast song. This are the differences between the 2 songs.

the lyrics are the same but for the opera,i have no idea what she's singing about.

Both are about the same just that the Jazz allows people to move to the beat but the opera allows relaxation..

The tempo of the sencond song is slower compared to the third song... The rythm of the third song is more jumpy while the second one is not.

Fantasia Barrino has a very soothing voice which is very suitable for her. Her version of summertime is different from others. Her version is is slightly slower! Her pitch is very high thus it suits the song. But unfortunately, her voice made the song sound sleepy and boring. Jill Scott & George Benson has display much energy and thus the performance was more energetic and lively. Their voices are of lower key! They added some variation in the song and it is more interesting! We both prefer Jill Scott & George Benson version of summertime! ;D

The Jill Scott & George Benson version was good one. The combination of Jill and George voices was unique.
While the version of Fantasia Barrino has a slower tempo. Her improvisation was not as good as Jill and George. Cindy prefers Jill & George because the combination was fantastic and the tune was very nice. Eline prefers the Jill & George version because it has it unique way os singing it. It is different from others and the voices was great.
